On this page
QuantyKube is two parts of Kubernetes, rewritten in Rust against the standard library and other QuantyRoot crates only: a data store with an undo button that speaks the etcd v3 API the API server uses, and a node runtime the kubelet starts containers through, with no shim and no pause container per pod.
Read these first
- Status: what is built, what runs in CI, and the warning that comes with it. QuantyKube is early. Nothing has run in production yet.
- Getting started: build it, put a Kubernetes API server on the store, delete something and bring it back, start the runtime.
- Move a cluster: one
kubectl applymoves a running kubeadm cluster onto QuantyKube, and one patch moves it back.
How it works
- History API: how the store serves what etcd forgets, on its socket and through the Kubernetes API, with RBAC.
- Node runtime: what a pod is without a pause container, a container start step by step, and what is not built yet.
- etcd API subset: every gRPC method the API server calls, and what QuantyKube answers.
- Decisions: every choice that might be regretted, one record each, with what it costs and what was rejected.
The first demonstration
QuantyKube is shown for the first time on 17 November 2026 at the Cloud Native Computing Switzerland Meetup in Zurich. These pages were written for that day, and before most of the code.
- Acceptance: what has to work that day.
- Demo commands: the demonstration as commands, run as written against k3s.
- The rented cluster: three servers with kubeadm, set up node by node.
Numbers
- Benchmarks: the store against etcd v3.6.15 and the runtime against containerd, on the same machine, slower results included.
Where these pages come from
Most pages here are the repository's own docs/ and README, rendered
from the main branch of
QuantyRoot/QuantyKube every
day, so they are never older than the repository. Each one links to its
source at the top. Getting started, Move a cluster and this page are
written for the site, from the same files.
